Suspect nabbed in Pac Heights art heist

A man who attempted to steal an estimated $300,000 in paintings from a home in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood has been arrested, a police spokesman said Monday.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Sunday, a real estate agent at a home in the 3000 block of Washington Street, near Alta Plaza Park, reported a man who was apparently not authorized to be on the premises, according to San Francisco police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi.

The real estate agent told the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Jeremiah Henry Kaylor, to leave the property, Manfredi said.

Kaylor left the home, apparently taking the paintings in a shipping crate via a moving truck, claiming that the items were “junk” that belonged to him, police said.

Officers took Kaylor into custody with the art.

Police said Kaylor’s last known residence was in Dragoon, Arizona.

The incident remains under investigation.

Techies fed up with high rents turn to boats on the San Francisco Bay

Living at sea? The Bay Area housing crisis is causing many people to come up with creative solutions. That includes ditching homes on land and choosing to live on a boat; much of the time illegally.

We all know how expensive it is to live here. You can sleep on the water legally, but the wait list for a permit at Pier 39 is about three years now. It’s why so many young techies are grabbing their motion sickness pills and jumping on a sailboat.

Just imagine, the barking sea lions at Pier 39 are your alarm clock every morning.

Home for Edward Agadjanian is a 42-foot vessel called the Euphoria. He moved in about a year ago and has grown the sea beard to match.

“My wife likes it,” he said with a laugh.

The 42-foot vessel has a television, a microwave, two very modestly sized bedrooms, and even a bathtub, which means there’s water inside his home and right outside the window, too.

But he says keeping up with maintenance is a constant struggle.

“There are always unexpected costs that come up,” he said. “Things that are exposed to salt water wear a lot quicker than you’d think. It all adds up, somewhere close to $2,000 a month.”

At Pier 39, only 10 percent of the boats can be used as homes in something like a neighborhood watch program. The harbormaster tells us the wait list has never been longer than it is now.

“We used to get maybe one or two calls a month for people asking about liveaboards,” said Pier 39 Harbormaster Sheila Chandor. “Now we get about 20 a day. Everybody’s struggling to find affordable places to live.”

“Sometimes they are just trying to sneak aboard,” said Agadjanian. “Am I suspicious of people doing it around here? Yeah.”

Sneaking around the system are people like a young techie who posted photos on Instagram of her new, illegal home. It’s the only way she could afford to live here. She agreed to Skype with ABC7 News, but only if we blurred her face.

“I knew some other people who were doing this,” she said. “So it seemed like a feasible solution. It’s just the magic of waking up on the water every day.”

She says she’s paying about $350 a month for that magic, not bad.

But Agadjanian says he wishes people would think twice before swapping a view of a front lawn for a wheel.

“The two happiest days in a man’s life is a day he buys a boat and the day he sells a boat,” he said.

So, are there any consequences? ABC7 News spoke with Bob Batha at the Bay Conservation and Development Commission. In his 38 years, he can’t recall anyone ever getting arrested for illegally living on a boat.

Meanwhile, fines fall on the marina and those can reach tens of thousands of dollars.

Sound Off: How might Warrior arena in Mission Bay affect our real estate market?

  • 27ca9 920x920 Sound Off: How might Warrior arena in Mission Bay affect our real estate market?

A: The Mission Bay neighborhood will continue to benefit from this move as its neighbors will be close to the stadium and the city won’t have the burden of debt for the stadium’s construction. This — along with the new hospital and other housing developments — will make this already thriving neighborhood more robust in a shorter period of time.

It’s a huge deal to have the world champion Golden State Warriors as part of our community. The Warriors have a huge fan base here and fill the stadium even in down years. All of this Warrior fever is extremely good for the local economy.

Regardless of professional sports teams, the housing market and property values will continue to do well. The Bay Area has many other attractive amenities at our disposal — weather, food, entertainment, business opportunities — as well as diverse cultures and population.

Having the NBA champions in our backyard is an added plus.

A: Considering the existing tight supply of housing in the area, real estate value in Mission Bay only stands to go up. With the newly opened UCSF Children’s Hospital, there are doctors, nurses and executives all in need of housing.

Take into account many future developments in the works with supposedly 10,000 permanent jobs at Pier 70. The San Francisco Giants have their own development plans with residential and commercial space.

Add construction crew for the Warriors arena, players, management team, execs, again, all in need of housing. The Golden State Warriors have said many times that out of the top 25 cities, San Francisco is the only one without a big arena.

Where will all of these people live? Mission Bay and surrounding areas tend to attract many pied-a-terre buyers and I think having the Warriors arena will only increase the desire for these second-home buyers to have a place in San Francisco.

A: Our real estate market continues to thrive with projects like the new Warriors stadium in Mission Bay.

It’s one more example of an area ready for revitalization and development.

There will undoubtedly be some logistical hurdles like traffic, noise and parking to contend with.

However, local commerce will certainly benefit from the influx of additional sports fans. Any opportunity to increase exposure and revenue to our amazing city of San Francisco is advantageous for homeowners and business owners alike.

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — In case you needed any more proof that San Francisco’s real estate market may be reaching the point of ridiculousness, a driveway has hit the market with an asking price of $50,000.

Fred Glick is the real estate agent for the property. He says the owner is an East Coast investor who bought the property at a tax auction.

“I don’t think he knew what he was buying.  He just saw an address in San Francisco for a cheap price, and he thought, ‘why not, let’s try it,’” Glick told KPIX 5.

After coming up with a street number so it could be listed on the MLS, Glick says he’s received calls from buyers willing to build long, skinny houses on the land.

“The problem is, there’s nowhere to do it.  It is just a driveway that goes into people’s garages,” Glick said.

On top of that, all homeowners with property on Lake, and West Clay have easements to get their cars in and out.
