Diller and his wife, Helen Diller, who died in 2015, created the Helen Diller Foundation in 1999, which has gifted more than $500 million to UCSF — the largest donation in campus history and one of the largest contributions ever made to a U.S. public institution.

The Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, a cancer research and treatment center at UCSF’s Mission Bay campus, was named in her honor after the foundation contributed $35 million to UCSF in 2003.

The Dillers believed investing in health care was the best way to make a global impact, said their daughter, Jackie Safier.

“They liked that UCSF was local, where they were raised,” said Safier, who is president of Prometheus. “They placed their votes on UCSF being a place to help health care worldwide.”

The Diller foundation has also given millions to the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the de Young Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, as well as several city parks.

Sanford Diller was born June 4, 1928, in San Francisco to Jewish immigrants from Austria. After graduating from UC Berkeley and the University of San Francisco School of Law, he was a practicing lawyer for many years before founding Prometheus in 1965. The San Mateo real estate firm was a major driver in developing downtown Mountain View in the 1980s, and is credited with pioneering high-density mixed-use development in the region.

“He was the hardest-working person in the business, he was really humble and thought his success was driven by hard work and discipline,” Safier said.

Besides Safier, who lives in San Francisco, Diller is survived by sons Brad Diller of Redwood City and Ron Diller of Israel, and seven grandchildren.

Private services will be held in Jerusalem. Contributions can be made in his name to the Jewish Community Federation’s Diller Teen programs or the Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCSF.

Temperatures may have cooled in the middle of winter in Silicon Valley, but the same can’t be said for the real estate market.

Real estate website Redfin recently ranked the 10 hottest neighborhoods in the United States, and nine of them are in San Jose. (Sunnyside in San Francisco is also in the top 10.)

At the top of the list is an enclave known as Bucknall, which runs between Quito Road and McCoy Avenue near the Westgate Shopping Center.

“It’s a small little area, and what’s interesting is that it’s all single-family homes,” said Redfin Silicon Valley agent Kalena Masching. ”I pulled up every sale in 2016 and 2017, and the average number of days on the market were eight days.”

There’s nothing on the market in Bucknall right now, but the adjacent areas are equally popular.

Coldwell Banker agent Ingrid Huang is listing a $1.98 million home only a few blocks away in Happy Valley at 4840 Country Lane and said 150 people came to the open house on Sunday. (See photos of the house in the gallery above.)

“We immediately had one cash offer,” Huang says. “But the seller wants to wait. You can sell houses in this area without advertisement.”

Another nearby house at 11781 Southwood Drive is listed for $1.65 million; the three-bedroom ranch home sold for $391,000 in October 2006.

Silicon Valley is known for its notoriously crazy prices, as the real estate market has exploded with a booming tech economy and an abundance of high-paying jobs. The most recent report from CoreLogic reveals that home prices in Santa Clara County reached a new peak of $1 million in December, up 24.2 percent from December 2016.

To develop its list, Redfin looked at those neighborhoods that saw the most visits to home listings. While Bucknall with a median sale price of $1.565 million in December 2017 is at the top, Cambrian, sandwiched between downtown Campbell and Willow Glen, had a median sale price of $1.244 million and came in second. In December 2017, all homes sold above their listed price in both neighborhoods. White Oak between Campbell and Los Gatos had a list price of $1.010 million in December 2017 and came in third.

The report points out that in recent years, San Francisco neighborhoods have dominated the list, but San Jose is now “hotter,” because Silicon Valley tech workers who were living in the city are moving to the South Bay.

San Jose agent Mike Gaines of the Sereno Group takes these sorts of rankings from real estate websites with a grain of salt, as he says you’re always going to come up with a different list of the top markets depending on what data is analyzed, whether its home prices, lot size, price per square foot and so on.

“In California, they’re all hot, whether you’re in San Francisco, on the Peninsula or in the Valley,” Gaines said. “You can look at the numbers one way or you can look at them another way.”

That said, Gaines has no doubt the San Jose market is booming and says the Redfin list represents the up-and-coming neighborhoods that are affordable to those who are priced out of the most appealing areas — mainly Rose Garden, Willow Glen and Almaden — with the best schools.

“These are the fringe neighborhoods next to the really nice neighborhoods,” Gaines said. “It’s absolutely crazy here. The traffic, the people, the demand. I can see how New York got be what it is.”

As if the Bay Area wasn’t already expensive enough to live in, a house in Oakland is officially on the market for Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.

The home, located near San Leandro at 2559 Oliver Ave., is listed for $648,000, and payment will be accepted in Bitcoin, or other cryptocurrencies, as well as cash.

Realtor Sean Beattie of Realty Experts said in the first few days the home was listed, the property received inquiries “every five minutes,” SF Weekly reported. The Bay Area News Group reports that offers have even come from as far away as Italy and China.

Seller Alec Wang is a Fremont native and real estate investor. He founded Tana Investment Group.

“We are exploring the different options and seeing what makes sense,” Wang said.

Wang said he had seen the rise of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in other industries. 

The price of a Bitcoin has skyrocketed over the past year from around $1,000 to nearly $20,000 in December. Late Thursday it was hovering around $8,600.

“It seems to be a good start as a testing case, both for me and my peers,” Wang said.

Beattie called the idea “insane” and “innovative.”

“I was getting calls from people all around the globe, actually from people who didn’t even know where Oakland was,” he said.

Despite all that Bitcoin buzz, financial analysts say they’re skeptical of buying and selling homes with it because it’s volatile and can come with high transaction costs.
