Obama heads to Bay Area Friday to raise money for Democrats

President Barack Obama returns to the Bay Area on Friday afternoon for one last round of fundraising here before November’s midterm elections.

Obama is scheduled to attend a Democratic National Committee fundraising reception at San Francisco’s W Hotel. Tickets cost from $500 to $32,400 each; the event will also feature musical guest Maxwell.

The president also has a more exclusive roundtable-format fundraiser — to which the press won’t be allowed access — scheduled for Saturday before flying back to Washington, D.C.

Obama is visiting at a precipitous moment. He’s fending off criticism of his handling of the militant group ISIS, the Ebola virus crisis, Russian aggression and shortcomings with the Secret Service. And former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and former President Jimmy Carter have been publicly panning his judgment on Iraq and Syria.

Gallup pegs Obama’s approval rating at 40 percent, not far off his 38 percent all-time low early last month.

Meanwhile, many political experts are predicting Republicans will win control of the Senate and pick up several House seats in November.

The Republican National Committee outraised the DNC in August, finishing that month with $3 million more in the bank, campaign finance reports showed; September’s numbers are not yet available.

But even when embattled, this president still can pack a Bay Area room and raise big bucks, said Robert Smith, a San Francisco State University political science professor.

“People who have that kind of money will spend a lot to spend some time in the president’s presence,” he said, adding that Obama’s relatively low popularity level means he’s more useful passing the hat than stumping for candidates. “His role as party leader is limited to raising money. In the places in the country where there are contested races, he’s not of any help by going there to campaign.”

Obama arrived in California on Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles, where he spoke at Cross Campus — a Santa Monica tech startup hub — about the nation’s economic progress. Then he headed to a DNC fundraiser at actress Gwyneth Paltrow’s Brentwood home, for which tickets cost $1,000 to $32,400.

The president is scheduled to speak Friday at Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas about the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument designation. He will then attend another DNC event before flying to San Francisco.

Vice President Joe Biden also raised money for the DNC this week in San Francisco at a reception Tuesday night at an undisclosed private home.

Obama last visited the Bay Area in July. He raised money for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee fundraiser at the Los Altos Hills home of real estate mogul George Marcus and for the House Majority PAC — a Democratic “Super PAC” independent expenditure committee — at San Francisco’s Four Seasons.

In May, the president headlined two Democratic National Committee fundraisers in Los Altos and San Jose. Last year, he was in the Bay Area for Democratic fundraisers in November, June and April.
