Although the property at 3737 Broderick St. is just setting sail on the real estate market, it holds a long, deep history that is evident before one enters the doors.

The four-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home’s design symbolizes the early 20th-century style known as Mediterranean Revival, mostly found in Florida and California.

Built in 1929 during the height of the revival, the house highlights the staples of the classic, coastal-centric style with its stucco wall panes, earth-tone colors and arched entrance.

Inspired by southern Italian and French architecture with a dash of Spanish influence, the 2,652-square-foot home is perfectly placed near the Marina Green and the St. Francis and Golden Gate yacht clubs.

Realtor Susan Getz of Coldwell Banker says the location is unique in that one step out of the front door brings you near a vast array of vessels docked in the San Francisco Bay.

“The neighborhood is like a seaside village,” Getz said. “There are fishing boats, sailboats and wonderful stores and shops that are frequented by the locals.”

A partial view of the bay can be seen from the east-side living room and upper-level front bedroom of the semi-detached property. It serves as a perfect backdrop when entertaining.

“With huge bay windows overlooking Broderick Street and the Marina and an elegant fireplace, I could easily spend hours in the living room watching the boats and water, reading books and sipping tea in front of a cozy fire,” Getz said.

While three bedrooms are located on the upper level, the fourth bedroom on the lower level can serve as an in-law suite. It features its own bath with shower, closet, kitchen and a separate entrance on the side of the house.

It also looks out toward the Mediterranean-style garden and ample-size backyard that provides plenty of open space.

“I was amazed at the size of the backyard, the wonderful lawn and garden,” Getz said about the long, wide area. “A beautiful lawn, evergreen trees and a patio – a lot of space, which is unusual for San Francisco.”

Getz added that the unobstructed south end allows the sun’s rays to lighten the home during the day, which is a bonus for any true Bay Area native.

“I can imagine I would relax in the light-filled family room on the opposite side of the house,” Getz said, “looking out the big windows into the lush landscaped garden and my kids playing games and running on the lawn.”

In addition, the interior features an updated kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances as well as hardwood floors that surround the home and bring awareness to the signatures of the Mediterranean Revival design such as symmetrical facades and a rectangular floor plan.

Priced at $2,649,500, the home also includes two-car tandem parking, laundry, storage, alarm system, automatic watering system and hot tub.

“It is not an oversized home; it’s a great-sized family home,” Getz said. “This is a home for someone who likes to be by the water and loves spending time outdoors but also loves to be part of San Francisco.”

Getz noted that residents with an affinity for yachts and the Marina will surely get their fix when the arrival of the America’s Cup sails through in August and September. But there are other reasons the Marina district is appealing.

“You have the best of both worlds,” she said. “You are right there by the shore and the Golden Gate Bridge but not far away from conveniences, cafes and shopping. You can stay inside or in the backyard and meet friends for a cup of coffee, or walk out the front door and enjoy the view of the San Francisco Bay.”
